Matisyahu, the artist who became wildly popular back in 2005 for his mixture of reggae and hip-hop with conventional Jewish themes, is set to kick off a three month U.S. tour on October 18.
Concert-goers will experience Matisyahus eclectic sound of reggae, rap, guitar, and beatboxing as well as a small dose of Hebrew and Yiddish. The Chicago Tribune has described Matisyahus performance as "soul-shaking brand of dancehall reggae, a show that captures both the jam band vibe of Phish and the ska-punk of Sublime." Matisyahu got his start in 2004 after partnering with JDub Records. He then released his first album titled Shake Off the Dust . . . Arise. His real breakthrough, however, was in 2005 when Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish) invited him to be a guest in his set. In 2005, Matisyahu released a live album, Live at Stubbs, as well as his second studio album, Youth. Afterward, he began touring in North America and Europe and released a remix album, No Place to Be, in 2006. Matisyahu has said that all of his songs are influenced and inspired by the teachings that inspire me. I want my music to have meaning, to be able to touch people and make them think. Chasidism teaches that music is 'the quill of the soul.' Music taps into a very deep place and speaks to us in a way that regular words can't." His awards include being in the Modern Rock Top 10 in 2006, having a number one digital album, and being voted the Most Lovable Oddball by Esquires Esky Music Awards 2006. It is rumored that Matisyahu has begun writing new songs for his next album.
