Mary J. Blige Background Information
Mary J. Blige is as the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul" in the music industry, and she makes a perfect match for the seasoned rapper. Her pipes have found her compared to the most acclaimed soul singers in history, including Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin. Blige recorded a demo at a local mall in 1988, and was signed to Uptown Records in 1989. She released "Whats the 411?" in 1991 and found success with her first two singles, "You Remind Me" and "Real Love." Both singles were certified Gold, and the follow-uptracks "Sweet Thing" and "Love No Limit" were also popular. In 1994, Blige released her sophomore effort, "My Life." It was darker than the first and included the singles "You Bring Me Joy," "Mary Jane (All Night Long)" and the title track. While the album was successful and certified triple platinum, Blige was dealing with drug and alcohol addiction. In 1996, she released a duet with Method Man, "Ill Be There for You/Youre All I Need to Get By," which was extremely popular. Blige released "Share My World" in 1997, which included the hits "Love is All We Need," with Nas, "I Can Love You" with Lil Kim, "Everything" and "Seven Days." The album was her biggest commercial success - was certified quadruple platinum. She traveled that year on the Share My World tour. "Mary" in 1999 marked a departure from Bliges normal sound - it was more based in the soul sounds from the 1970s and 1980s, and her fans didnt respond particularly well. While Bliges popularity took a slight dip at the end of the decade, she came back in a big way with "No More Drama" in 2001, which included the hit "Family Affair" and "Rainy Dayz." 2003 brought "Love & Life," which included "Love @ 1st Sight," and was another slight lull for Blige. She came back with "The Breakthrough" in 2005. The album sold 727,000 copies in its first week, marking the biggest first-week sales for an R&B solo artist in SoundScan history, and the biggest overall debut of 2005. The album included the hits "Be Without You" and "Enough Cryin." This album marked a time when Blige was open about her past addictions, saying that she was now free of drugs and alcohol. Most recently, Blige offered up "Growing Pains," which included the massive upbeat hit "Just Fine." Information about GreatSeats.com
