Marc Cohn is best known for his massive hit "Walking in Memphis," released in the early 1990s, right when he entered the musical scene. Since his success, he has released four other albums, exploring his musical creativity while living a somewhat private life.
The singer has said that his life changed after hearing Van Morrisons "Astral Weeks." After hearing the song, be purchased every album from the artist, as well as Joni Mitchell and Jackson Brown. Eventually he learned to play the piano from his older brother and joined a cover band, Doanbrook Hotel. Eventually, Cohn learned the art of the guitar and songwriting and began touring Los Angeles coffee and steakhouses. After moving to New York for his fianc?he formed Supreme Court, a massive collective with a horn section.
When Carly Simon learned of the band and invited them to play Caroline Kennedys wedding, Cohn decided to step out on his own and send out solo demos. He landed a deal with Atlantic Records, and co-produced his first effort with Ben Wisch.
Cohn released his self-titled debut in 1991. After the iconic success of "Walking in Memphis," Cohn received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1992. Cohn released 'The Rainy Season" in 1993 and "Burning the Daze" in 1998. He released "Live 04-05" in 2005, and "Join the Parade" in the fall of 2007. While his albums didnt do particularly well commercially, he clearly has massive support from the musical community - guests on his collections include Patty Griffin, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Chris Botti and Rosanne Cash.
"Walking in Memphis" is often wrongfully attributed to Bruce Springsteen - Cohns raspy, soulful voice and intricate instrumental evoke the sound of the boss. The track also gained popularity as a cover - pop diva Cher and country crooners Lonestar took a stab at the song.
Cohn is also known for a tour date gone horribly wrong. After a concert with Susanne Vega in Denver, Colo., on August 7, 2005, Cohn was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking. While he survived, the tour was cancelled and it took time for him to return to the spotlight.
