Mandy Moore gained fame around the same time as pop singers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, but she has proven herself to be much more than a flirty pop tart, taking on serious acting roles and mature albums alike, proving that she has staying power in Hollywood.
Moore was born in New Hampshire and grew up in Florida. After seeing the play Oklahoma!, she became interested in performing and her obsession never stopped. She gained attention from record labels after performing the national anthem at a number of Florida sporting events, and she eventually was signed to Epic Records.
In 1999, Moore toured with the Backstreet Boys before releasing 'So Real." She was pigeon holed as a "pop princess" and dismissed by critics - the album, however, was certified platinum, prompted by the hit single "Candy."
The following album, "I Wanna Be with You" was released in May of 2000 - it was a reworking of "So Real," with a number of remixes and some new tracks, including the title track. The single, featured on the soundtrack for "Center Stage," was quite popular. The next album for the singer, "Mandy Moore," was released in 2001. It included the hits "In My Pocket" and "Saturate Me." The album was still considered by many critics to be teen pop, but it was considered more "high road" than her other albums. The collection was certified gold in the U.S.
Moore released "Coverage" in 2003 - critics found it to be much more mature than her previous albums. The collection includes a number of covers from the '70s and '80s, including the singles "Have a Little Faith in Me" and "Senses Working Overtime." Next up was "The Best of Mandy Moore" in 2004.
Moore has been double-duty in Hollywood as a singer and actress for more than half of the past decade. She began her film career with a supporting role in "The Princess Diaries" in 2001, and she eventually made her way to starring roles in films such as "A Walk to Remember," "How To Deal," "Chasing Liberty," "Because I Said So," and "License to Wed," among others.
In 2006, Moore mentioned that she missed performing music, and wanted to get back into the studio. She signed with a new record company, The Firm, which gave her complete freedom over her work. The resulting album was "Wild Hope," released in 2007. It includes the single "Extraordinary," and has been doing well on the Billboard 200 charts.
