Madonna

News and Information

Madonnas "Sticky & Sweet" tour is coming this fall behind her most recent release, "Hard Candy," which brings yet another musical style into the fold for this artistic chameleon.

Madonna, who sits in the Guinness World Records list as the "Worlds most successful female recording artist of all time," has sold more than 200 million albums globally.

Madonna was raised in Michigan and tried her luck in New York City as a dancer. After five years, the singer was recognized and was signed to Sire Records. Her first two singles were "Everybody" and "Burning Up," and she really found success with the album, and title single, "Like a Virgin." The tone of the song and Madonnas image of bleached hair, fishnet stockings and skirts over Capri pants became the look of the 1980s, and Madonnas music became the sound.

Throughout the decade, she continued with her bad-girl image and continued releasing successful singles, including "Papa Dont Preach," "Open Your Heart," "True Blue," "La Isla Bonita," and "Causing a Commotion." The album "Like A Prayer," released in 1989, carried her over into the 1990s with massive success, including the title track, "Express Yourself," and "Cherish."

Madonna became more explicit with her actions and performances, and remained that way through 1997, when she strayed from the mainstream. She returned with a dignified role in the film "Evita" and she performed in the soundtrack - "Dont Cry for Me Argentina" and "You Must Love Me" were both successful, the latter taking home an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Madonna changed her style again with "Ray of Light" in 1998. She became more of a critical darling with the album, and was also successful commercially - it included the title track, as well as "Frozen" and "Beautiful Stranger." "Music" was her next album in 2000, and it had tended toward hip hop more than dance, along with some more mellow songs. The album included the hits "Music," "Dont Tell Me" and "What It Feels Like for a Girl." After the two releases, Madonna embarked on her massive world tour, the first since 1993.

Madonna continued her success with "American Life" in 2003, which included "Hollywood." "Confessions on a Dance Floor" came in 2005, and was considered to be Madonnas return to the pop sound with which she began. Hits from the album included "Hung Up," "Sorry" and "Get Together." Madonna followed the release with her "Confessions" tour, which grossed $260 million across the globe.

Most recently, Madonna is supporting "Hard Candy," which was released in the Spring of 2008. The first single, "Four Minutes" with Justin Timberlake, has been a massive success. She did a short promotional tour for the album and the larger tour, and was lauded for her efforts by critics.
