Macy Gray has spent her career perfecting her raspy-voiced neo soul sound, and she has collected quite following with her eclectic sound and funky personality.
Gray grew up in Canton, Ohio, and began her career in the music industry with plans to be a songwriter, not a performer. When a vocalist didnt show up to record the songs one day, she lent used her pipes on the demo and received a lot of attention from jazz artists. After a rough patch with Atlantic Records and some personal strife, the singer wound up with Epic Records in 1998.
Grays debut album, "On How Life Is," was released in 1999. While the first single from the effort, "Do Something," was lackluster, the second single, "I Try," became an international hit. The following singles, "Still" and "Why Didnt You Call Me" were also popular, and the album wound up selling more than 3 million copies in the U.S., UK and Canada. She also scored a Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for "I Try."
The next album for the quirky singer was "The ID" - it was more popular in the UK than the U.S., although it did hit No.11 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. In 2003, she released "The Trouble with Being Myself," which was a critical triumph. "When I see You" was a radio hit in the U.S., and was also quite popular in the U.K.
Gray also released "The Very Best of Macy Gray" in 2004, and a live album, "Live in Las Vegas" the following year. Most recently, she released "Big," her fourth studio album, in March of 2007. The album includes collaborations with Fergie, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Cole and will.i.am, whose will.i.am Music Group released the album. The effort came four years after "The Trouble with Being Myself," and while it wasnt as popular in the UK as other albums, it sold well in other European countries.
In addition to her music, Gray has tried her hand at acting. She was featured in "Training Day," "Spider-Man," "Around the World in 80 Days," "Domino and "Idlewild," among other films. She also appeared on the TV shows "Ally McBeal," "American Dreams" and "Thats So Raven"
Touring is still very important to Gray - on July 5th of this year, Gray recorded a Soundstage Live Concert for PBS, including all of her most famous hits. Just days later, she performed at Live Earth in Rio de Janeiro.
