Born in 1935 and raised in the small Kentucky town of Butcher Holler, country legend Loretta (Webb) Lynn was the second of eight children. By the age of 13, Loretta Lynn was married to Oliver "Doolittle" Lynn who was eight years her senior. The young family decided to leave behind the coal mining industry and moved to the logging town of Custer, Washington. Six children soon followed.
When Loretta Lynn was 24 her husband bought her a guitar as an anniversary present. Loretta, who sang regularly in churches and local concerts, taught herself to play. In 1959, Loretta formed her own band and appeared on a televised talent contest where she was spotted by a record company. She signed her first music contract with Zero Records in 1960 and released three non-album singles the first year.
In 1963, Loretta Lynn released her first of many studio albums, Loretta Lynn Sings. Though she had already received limited time in the spotlight, her breakthrough success came with the 1967 album, Don't Come Home A' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind). Many of her songs deal with female empowerment, both as a reminder to her fans and to herself. Her relationship with Doolittle was often strained with numerous reports of disagreements and affairs on his part. Despite their tumultuous relationship, Loretta Lynn and Doolittle remained married until his death from diabetes in 1996.
Over her 50+ years in the music industry, Loretta Lynn has released 38 studio albums, 17 compilation albums and countless singles. Some of the more popular albums include Coal Miner's Daughter (1970), We Only Make Believe (1971), Lead Me On (1972) and Honky Tonk Angels (1993). Loretta Lynn has taken home countless awards including four Grammy Awards, 12 Academy of Country Music Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
