Loreena McKennitt is a Canadian artist known for her New Age, Celtic and Middle Eastern themes and mastery of the harp and piano.
The artist commits to very diligent research before recording an album. She regularly immerses herself into a culture before deciding on the concept of the album. Different albums clearly have very different concepts, ranging from the folklore and culture of Ireland to the feels of Galicia, a Celtic area of Spain mixed with Arabic tones.
McKennitt released her first album, "Elemental" in 1985, and proceeded to release seven more self-produced collections in the next decade. While "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," "Parallel Dreams" in 1989 and "The Visit" in 1991 failed to chart, "The Mask and Mirror" in 1994 made it into the Billboard 200 Albums chart. When "Bonny Partmore" was featured in the film "Highlander 3" in 1995, McKennitts stock began to rise on an international scale. The Book of Secrets" in 1997 hit the Top 20 album chart, fueled by the success of the single "The Mummers Dance."
In 1999, the artist released "Live in Paris and Toronto," then she took a long break from recording, due in part to the death of her fiancé Ronald Rees the previous year. He drowned in a boating incident along with two of her close friends. All profits from her 1999 release were donated to the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund, which she founded in honor of the people that she lost.
Her next album was "An Ancient Muse" in 2006, which hit No. 83 on the Billboard charts. Her most recent release was "Nights from the Alhambra," a three-disc DVD/CD set.
McKennitt is often compared to Enya but with a more traditional sense to her music. She involves a lot of classical sounds to her music, and has a literary sense to her sound.
