Liza Minnelli News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Liza Minnelli is an Academy-Award winning address who took her family genes in the industry and turned them into a legend, becoming one of only 12 entertainers to take home an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Academy Award.

Minnellis mother was actress and singer Judy Garland and her father was film director Vincente Minnelli. The singer performed with her mother as a child, and noted that, while the two had a close relationship, there was a certain air of competition on stage.

Minnelli began performing at the age of 17 with an Off-Broadway revival of
"Best Foot Forward.” The performance helped her to solidify a positive reputation outside of her performance-oriented family. She made it back to Broadway eventually and won a Tony Award for Flora the Red Menace.

Eventually, the actress made her way into the movies. Her first film was "The Sterile Cuckoo” in 1969 - her real breakthrough was her role as Sally Bowles in the film "Cabaret.” Minnelli took home a Best Actress Academy Award and Golden Globe Award, and was plastered on the front of many national publications.

To follow up success of "Cabaret,” Minnelli embarked on a groundbreaking show with Broadway director Robert Fosse. "Liza with a 'Z” was filmed over two concert performances in risqué costumes designed "It” designer of the time, Halston. The show became the stuff that show business legend is made of.

When Minnelli appeared with Robert DeNiro in the 1977 film "New York, New York,” she recorded the theme, and it has since become her trademark song ("Theme from New York, New York”). Frank Sinatra later covered the track, and they performed it together a number of times. Minnellis final lead film performance was in "Arthur” with Dudley Moore in 1981.

The singer has been recording alums throughout her entire career, her most successful probably being "Results” in 1989, which included the pop singles "Dont Drop Bombs,” "Losing My Mind,” "Love Pains” and "So Sorry, I Said.”

She made a triumphant return to Broadway in 1997, replacing Julie Andrews in "Victor/Victoria.” After a bout with viral encephalitis in 2000, Minnelli beat the odds after being told she would spend the rest of her life in a wheel chair - she made a Broadway comeback with "Lizas Back” in 2002. She has been touring the world ever since, and has also been taking smaller acting roles again.
