Commercial radio had a rule to never play two female soloists back to back on any program, which quickly changed. McLachlan decided to buck the conventional wisdom of music promoters and thus Lilith Fair was born.

The prodigious and varied talent held in the female soloists and female-lead bands that have participated in these shows received solid acclaim and much fan support. Lilith Fair successfully made its point from 1997-1999 before it had to take a hiatus. The ten-year absence was not due to low attendance: Lilith Fair was one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world, with over 1.5 million fans in attendance and raising over $10 million dollars for national and local charities. In 1997, Lilith Fair earned $16 million, which clocked it as the number one top grossing of any touring festival.
