Lenny Kravitz has always had the ability to wrap a mixing of soul, rock funk, hard rock, folk, ballads and reggae into a neat package with a retro" bow, amassing over 20 million albums sold and a place in music history.

Kravitz grew up in New York City, where he knew he wanted to be a musician by the age of five. While he was sure he wanted to perform, his parents wanted him to have something to fall back on. Instead of heeding their warnings, he moved out at the age of 15 and lived in his car.

Kravitz had problems in his early career as a multiracial performer. His music wasnt white enough" or black enough" for many record executives, but when he joined forces with artist Henry Hirsch in 1985, he found his match. The two bonded over their interest in using real instruments and vintage recording equipment and created a demo. The singer was signed to Virgin Records in 1989.

Kravitz released Let Love Rule" later that year, and it blew up in Europe, while finding moderate success in the U.S. in 1991, the singer released Mama Said," which made waves in the Billboard Chart, including the hit single It Aint Over til its Over." He released Are You Gonna Go My Way" in 1993, which is arguably his trademark song.

Over his career, Kravitz has released a large number of albums and scored several additional hits, including Fly Away," which scored him his first of four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The other tracks that earned the honor were American Woman," Again" and Dig In."

This year, Kravitz will release It is Time for a Love Revolution."
