Whatever it is that Kellie Pickler has, she has worked hard to get it. Starting in April, the former American Idol contestant is once again on the road with Taylor Swift (her best friend) and the 2010 tour is already proving to be a sell out success.
Kellie will give several performances in the mid-west and will then go west to perform in California in April. Her tour will visit parts of Canada in May before heading out to the east coast in June. As was the case in 2009, most of her tour dates will be as a part of Taylor Swift's "Fearless" tour, including the June 2nd performance at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. She'll also join Rascal Flatts' tour later this summer for a few dates.
Kellie Pickler made it from season five to season six as an American Idol contestant in 2005. Although she did not win, two record labels immediately signed her. Her first album, "Small Town Girl" sold over 800,000 copies and was certified gold; she was just 19 years old. The now 24-year-old dazzling country music star and television personality is known for her hits: "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind," "Don't You Know You're Beautiful," and "Best Days of Your Life," to name a few.
Simon Cowell admits that Pickler was one of his favorites on American Idol; he predicted she would be in the final three, and even went so far as to tell the press that he preferred her to Carrie Underwood.
Even though her presentation in front of the judges was a bit rough, her Southern charm and unpolished personality won audiences immediately. She mispronounced words when she told the audience that she hadn't done many live shows. US Weekly magazine's story, "Kellie: The Next Jessica Simpson," described her as having that '?sweet Southern style and ditzy demeanor' which charmed everyone.
Born June 28, 1986, in Albermarle, North Carolina, Kellie has had a young life fraught with uncertainty and hardship. Her mother left when she was two years old and her father was in and out of jail. Although her mother returned once to take her daughter away from her father, the courts eventually denied custody to both of her natural parents. She describes her father as an alcoholic and a drug addict, and her mother's disappearing act has meant that Kellie has not seen her for many years.
She was raised by her grandparents and has cited her grandfather, Clyde Pickler Sr., and her grandmother, Faye Pickler, as the two driving forces in her life. Kellie graduated in 2004 from Stanly High School in New London, North Carolina. Her grandmother's death in 2002 made life harder for the teen, but she still excelled as a cheerleader and she was also elected Beauty Queen.
Pickler worked as a waitress and continued to live with her grandfather after graduating. She made an appearance in a Charlotte television contest called, "Gimme the Mike! Charlotte," when she finished in second place. She also entered a Miss America circuit contest and won "Miss Stanly County" when she was 17 years old.
After her unprecedented success on 'Idol', and her gold album, she returned to her hometown of Albemarle, where a parade in her name ensued and she was given the key to the city. The mayor declared the day, "Kellie Pickling" day.
Kellie has been nominated by the Academy of Country Music Awards in both 2007 and 2008 for "Top New Female Vocalist of The Year" and has lost both times to Taylor Swift. It appears however, that there is no lost love between them as Kellie and Taylor collaborate on all fronts from song writing together to touring. Stay tuned for more from the down home country beauty who has talent to spare!
