Over the years, Judy Collins has developed a reputation for her innocent soprano voice, her ardent social activism, and her ability to embrace a very diverse collection of genres and excel at them all.
Collins studied classical piano as a child, but was turned on to the folk revival of the early 1960s by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. She turned from the piano to the guitar and honed her songwriting skills all the while. She moved to New York City, signed with Elektra Records and released her first album, "A Maid of Constant Sorrow" at the age of 22 in 1961.
In the beginning of Collins career, she stuck with traditional folk songs written by great social poets such as Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton. Popular singles from the time included covers of 'Mr. Tambourine Man" and 'Turn, Turn, Turn." She also worked with a number of songwriters that would soon go onto international acclaim, including Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman.
In 1966, "In My Life" started to show the diversity of Collins musical interests. Orchestra sections were added to a number of songs and she included artists such as The Beatles and Kurt Weill into her repertoire. "Wildflowers" in 1967 included the hit single "Both Sides Now," written by Mitchell. She continued to release albums of other peoples work into the 1970s, but eventually began to excel with her own compositions. Her own songs include the tracks "My Father" and "Born to Breed." Her more famous singles from her time with Elektra include "Send in the Clowns" and a traditional version of the hymn "Amazing Grace."
By 1990, Collins signed with Columbia Records and released her 23rd album, "Fires of Eden." In 1993, she released 'Judy Sings Dylan…Just Like a Woman." Most recently, she released "Portrait of an American Girl" in 2006.
