Jill Scott entered the music industry as more of a poet than anything else - she was a spoken word artist in Philadelphia before becoming a successful recording artist with a number of critically acclaimed albums.
Scott was discovered by Amir "?uestlove” Thompson from The Roots when she was reciting her poetry in Philadelphia. From there, she co-wrote "You Got Me” with the roots, which turned into a duet with Erykah Badu that scored a Grammy Award in 2000.
Before Scott came out with her own collections, she was known for electric collaborations with fellow R&B artists such as Eric Benet, Will Smith and Common. By the time 2000 rolled around, Scott was ready to branch out on her own - she released "Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1.” The track "A Long Walk” garnered her a "Best Female Vocal Performance” nod in 2003.
In 2001, Scott released "Experience: Jill Scott 826,” and in 2004 she took home a Grammy Award for "Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance” for "Cross My Mind” from the album "Beautifully Human” Words and Sounds Vol. 2.” Most recently, the soulful singer released "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol.3” in the fall of 2007.
While Scott performs music regularly, she is still devoted to writing poetry. In 2005, she released "The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours.” The talented artist also has tried her hand at acting, with much success. She was featured in the Canadian production of "RENT,” plus the films "Hounddog” and "Why Did I Get Married?”
