Jackson Browne News and Information
Posted 3/26/2009
Jackson Brown's music career officially began in 1971, after signing with Asylum Records. The next year, he released the album "Jackson Browne". The album featured "Doctor My Eyes," "Rock Me on the Water," "Jamaica Say You Will," and "Song for Adam."

His next album came in 1973 with "For Everyman". It was less successful than his breakout album, though it still sold roughly a million copies. "Late for the Sky", 1974, brought "For a Dancer" and "Before the Deluge." The title track was also featured in the film "Taxi Driver" by Martin Scorsese.

Critics feel that his next album, "The Pretender" (1976), is his musically darkest and lyrically brightest album. Browne channeled his loss and depression into the production of his fourth album after the suicide of his first wife, Phyllis Major. So, who is the pretender? "...it's not me exactly, although sometimes people applaud for me at the moment in the song as if I am, but in truth there is a bit of the Pretender in me, but it's anybody that's sort of lost sight of some of their dreams...and is going through the emotions of trying to make a stab at a certain way of life that he sees other people succeeding at," said Browne.

"Running on Empty" (1977) became Brownes biggest commercial success, which sustained him for four years until "Im Alive" was released 1981. More than a decade later Browne released "Looking East" (1996), which wasnt as commercially successful as his previous album, and then in 2002, his next album came with "The Naked Ride Home".

Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. During the induction, his music was complimented by Bruce Springsteen when he noted that while the Eagles got to the Hall first, "You [Browne] wrote the songs they wished they had written." The preceding year, three of Browne's albums — "For Everyman", "Late for the Sky", and "The Pretender" — had been selected by Rolling Stone magazine as among its choices for the 500 best albums of all time.

In August 2008, Browne sued John McCain and the Republican Party for using his song "Running on Empty" in an attack against Barack Obama without his permission.
