Andrew McMahon, creator of Jack's Mannequin, a group originally meant to be a side project from his band, Something Corporate, is playing his heart out this year. The deluxe edition of "Glass Passenger", as well as the "Dear Jack Movie" is selling as fast as the tickets to his upcoming shows in April. The Southern California band will be playing several East Coast dates, including the Hoodwink Festival.
Jack McMahon fans have a lot to look forward to. His reunion show with 'Something Corporate' recently added to the Bamboozle Roadshow Festival, as well as the confirmed news that JM is now working on their third studio album, show a lot of promise for the future of this singer/songwriter.
Andrew McMahon never missed a beat, despite being a man whose life was literally on the line when he was diagnosed with acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia just months before their debut album 'Everything in Transit' was released. McMahon says that he had to admit he was feeling tired, but when he got the news about the cancer, he chose to fight.
McMahon, who initially was the vocalist for the band, 'Something Corporate', recorded a solo piece titled, "Locked Doors" in 2003. This was the defining moment for what was soon to become Jack's Mannequin. In 2004 Something Corporate took a temporary break and McMahon began to lay down the piano and vocal tracks for other songs he never expected to release. He saw this work as therapeutic; the songs were intensely personal, dealing with subjects that pertained only to him, but slowly gained momentum. He paid for the production of his recordings out of his own pocket and eventually found himself striking up a deal with Maverick Records.
The name, "Jack's Mannequin" has an eerie reality: Andrew was toying with calling the band 'Mannequin', but had also written a song entitled, 'Dear Jack' about a friend who has suffered from childhood leukemia. Although at the time he thought nothing of the using the name 'Jack' as part of the band name, it became an ironic tidbit once he was diagnosed with leukemia himself. The film, "Dear Jack" is as personal documentary of Andrew's own journey through his diagnosis, treatment and recovery from the disease. He made a complete recovery, and in 2008, "The Glass Passenger" was released. JM has also released several EP's: "The Ghost Overground" and "In Valleys", which contain "Swim", "Cell Phone", "Sleazy Wednesday" and "At Full Speed".
The current members of Jack's Mannequin are: Andrew McMahon (vocals, piano), Bobby Anderson (guitar, vocals), John Sullivan (bass guitar) and Jay McMillan (drums). The band participates in raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Andrew McMahon, who made a full recovery from his own diagnosis, was recently named "Stand Up To Cancer" celebrity ambassador.
