Iron Maiden is touring on the "Somewhere Back in Time World Tour," which is heading to North America this Spring.
Iron Maiden is an English heavy metal band from the East End of London. It is one of the most successful and influential bands in the metal genre, having gained massive success both commercially and critically. Groups such as Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, UFO and Wishbone Ash count the band as a major influence.
The group formed on Christmas day in 1975 when Steve Harris and Dave Murray came together. There have been a number of lineup changes over the years, but the band is currently Harris, Murray, Bruce Dickinson, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers and Nicko McBrain. The group performed for three years without recording a demo, but in 1978 it finally happened. The albums sold like hot cakes, and the band rose to fame shortly after.
The bands debut album "Iron Maiden" was released in 1980, and hit No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart its first week. They became the face of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with hits such as "Running Free," "Transylvania," "Phanton of the Opera" and "Sanctuary." The group toured the UK with fellow rockers KISS, and they released their sophomore album, "Killers" in 1981.
"The Number of the Beast" in 1982 became the bands vehicle for international success. The continued to release albums and tour regularly, including the World Slavery Tour, which is one of the most massive tours in music history. It included 193 shows over 13 months, many of which were played back-to-back in the same city.
After the record-breaking tour, the band took a six month break before heading back into the studio to record the experimental collection "Somewhere in Time." It differed from the typical Iron Maiden sound, but was successful none the less.
The group dealt with lineup turmoil, but they eventually regained their footing in the rock industry in 2000 when they released "Brave New World" and performed over 100 shows on another sizeable tour.
The group has continued to release albums, including the most recent "A Matter of Life and Death" in 2006. A DVD of the classic "Life After Death" album was also put out recently, and a best-of collection is in the works.
