Hootie and the Blowfish have enjoyed massive success around the world, and they continue to bring together pop with blues-rock in a popular form that few other bands have achieved.
Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber and Jim "Soni" Sonefield formed the group at the University of South Carolina in 1989. Interestingly, Rucker is not Hootie and the band is not the Blowfish - the group took its name after two of Ruckers friends - one looked like an owl and the other, you guessed it, looked like a blowfish.
The band released its debut album, "Cracked Rear View," in 1994. The album spawned a number of massively popular singles, including "Hold My Hand," "Let Her Cry" and "Only Wanna Be With You." In the end, the effort went platinum 16 times. The bands second album, "Fairweather Johnson," debuted on the Billboard Charts at No. 1 and easily sold 2 million copies in its first four months, but didnt include any hit singles. The next two albums were similar, and in 2004 they released a best-of collection that also featured the popular 54-40 cover "I Go Blind," which was included on the soundtrack for the hit television series "Friends." In 2005, the Hootie and the Blowfish released "Looking for Lucy."
In addition to the commercial success the band has enjoyed, they were also supported by critics - the group won the coveted "Best New Artist" award at the 1996 Grammy show. They were also invited to appear on MTV Unplugged.
While the Rucker and the band have slowed down in the recording studio, their touring schedule certainly has not - they regularly tour, including an annual New Years Eve show in Las Vegas. They are also active in philanthropy - the entire band traveled to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to build homes for five days with Musicians Village.
