Henry Rollins begins his spoken word tour in Europe this year. He will come back to the US in mid-February where he will do a show in California on the 17th and then move to the other western states. The DC-born Rollins will perform in his hometown at the Birchmere on March 9th and 10th before going up to Philadelphia and New York, and then on to Canada.
The man is busy in every way a man can be busy: a rock star, a movie star, an author, and a unique personality, he is a one of a kind original that has graced the world of Punk Rock (at one time) with his primal edge and mega lawlessness. He keeps his portrait alive with a regular radio show on KCRW, and regular blog contributions to many sites on top of his regular habit of touring doing spoken word. For a man that has been so completely un-user-friendly, he sure has a lot of fans.
Rollins was born in Washington, DC, on February 13, 1961, as Henry Lawrence Garfield. As an anti-social kid growing up in a less than ideal setting, he admits to low self-esteem and a shoddy attention span. However, at the suggestion of a militaristic schoolteacher he discovered the art of lifting weights, which probably has saved him for a number of reasons: he has been known to be aggressive at the exact wrong time. At one point in his career as the front man for LA's premier hard core punk band, Black Flag, fans used to beat him up, spit on him and scratch him with pens or nails; his pursuit of strength and physical prowess eventually won at that battle.
Needless to say, Black Flag needed a break from him about as much he needed one from them. Rollins has the original members of that band to thank for the break they gave him. If it hadn't been for their offer to let him sing, Rollins's soul might have died at the Haagen Das ice cream store he was managing; one can be almost certain that for this man there was probably no future in ice cream.
His creative spirit and strong voice has landed him firmly in the career that he has today. Rollins is host of numerous radio shows, such as Harmony in my Head on Indie 103 (LA- based), as well as the "Henry Rollins Show" (TV), and he held a regular role on the show "Sons of Anarchy", to name a few.
He has done a lot of film work as well. In addition to the documentary style films that were made about the band Black Flag, he was also in "The Slog Movie" about west coast punk. He also appeared in "The Right Side Of My Brain" with Lydia Lunch in 1985, and several others that had more commercial mainstream success.
Rollin's belief in 'the iron', meaning the weights that he has used to make himself strong and rather invincible, is a subject of his own written and spoken word. He is a role model to be sure, not just to other men but any walk of life that seeks a constructive relationship to their own suffering, for that is his message. His pain makes him strong.
Rollin's serves the American troops by being a regular overseas entertainer and he also does as much as he can for many Human Rights causes.
