Heart is a hard rock band with sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson at its backbone ? the group is also known for successfully reinventing itself in the 1980?s with a softer sound, long after many ?70s rock bands had fallen into obscurity.
Ann and Nancy grew up on the West Coast, and both had an interest in music ? while Nancy learned guitar and flute as a child, Nancy did not take formal lessons, turning an interest to singing (she has since learned to play a number of instruments). While in college, the sisters decided to focus on performing ? Nancy was a solo folk singer and Ann joined the group Heart. After Ann formed a relationship with bandmate Mike Fisher, Nancy also joined the group and forged a romance with his brother, Roger, also in the band.
The group gained fame in Vancouver, eventually recording its debut, "Dreamboat Annie" in 1975 from the Canadian label Mushroom. The album was released in the U.S. after selling 30,000 copies in Canada ? it was certified platinum by the RIAA, based mostly on the hit singles "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man." The next hit for the band was "Barracuda" off of the album "Little Queen on Portrait" ? that album was also certified platinum.
When the Wilson/Fisher relationships fizzled, Roger left the group. After five years, more lineup changes and two weak albums, the group was written off in the music world. In 1985, however, the band lined up a massive comeback album. The self-titled collection, which sold over five million copies, boasted four Top Ten hits ? "What About Love?," "Never," "These Dreams" and "Nothin? At All." They followed this album with 1987?s "Bad Animals," which featured the hits "Alone," "Who Will You Run To" and "There?s the Girl." The 1999 album "Brigade" included more hits, "All I Want to Do is Make Love to You" and "Stranded."
The band was still very much on the top of its game, but the Heart sisters began to form Lovemongers, an acoustic quartet with Sue Ennis and Frank Cox. By the late ?90s, Heart went on hiatus for the girls to focus on the Lovemongers, which released two albums. Most of Heart?s popularity in recent years has come from a very popular episode of VH1?s "Behind the Music" and two best-of sets.
The sisters spent much of the band?s hiatus on separate projects ? Nancy released a solo album and penned the score to the hit film "Almost Famous" and Ann participated in "A Walk Down Abbey Road: A Tribute to the Beatles" tour. The band came together to release "Jupiters Darling" in 2004.
The band is known for its roots in rock and controversy, while more popular singles during the height of its fame was more geared towards ballads. However the sound has changed over the years, it is clear that the group has a massive group of fans to support it, and the members put a lot into touring for them.
