Hall and Oates

News and Information
Daryl Hall and John Oates combined rock and roll with rhythm and blues in a way that few have attempted in the past, and they succeeded with flying colors, putting out some of the best-known singles of the late-'70s and early-'80s.

The duo met at the Adelphi Ballroom in Philadelphia, Pa., while attending Temple University in 1967. Hall was the frontman for the Temptones, Oates lead the Masters - when gunfire erupted at a band competition that both bands had entered, they ran to the same service elevator for safety and became close friends. It took them two years to get together musically, and three years after that they were signed to Atlantic Records and put out their debut release.

The group struggled at first for a solid sound, and it took them about three years to embrace the "blue-eyed soulsters," mostly based upon the single, "Shes Gone," which was covered by the Tavares and became a success. In 1975, the group joined RCA and released "Daryl Hall & John Oates" (also known as The Silver Album, due to its silver background). The album was their first real success, including the single "Sara Smile." "Bigger than Both of Us" was released the next year, which included "Do What You Want, Be What You Are" and the mega-hit "Rich Girl."

As the disco craze was sweeping America, Hall and Oates struggled to keep their fan base - they tried to embrace the dance style, but it didnt go over well. In 1980, however, they released "Voices," which included the hits "Youve Lost that Lovin Feelin" (a cover), "Kiss on My List," "You Make My Dreams" and "Every Time You Go Away." Their success continued the following year with 'Private Eyes," which included the hit title track and "I Cant Go for That (No Can Do)." "Maneater" was released from the album "H2O," and by the time they released "Rock 'n Soul Part 1" in 1983, they were one of the most popular pop groups in America.

While the band was always known for massive tours, they took a moment in 1985 to record 'Live at the Apollo" with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick of The Temptations. Off of the album came a medley of "The Way You Do the Things You Do" and "My Girl."

More recently, the band released "Do It for Love," in 2003, as well as some solo albums. In 2004, they released a cover album called 'Our Kind of Soul," which included the tracks "Ill Be Around" and "I Can Dream About You." A holiday album was also released in 2006. In addition to all of the releases, the duo has been keeping up with the rigorous touring schedule they have held over the years, entertaining their fans with their blues-rock.
