The Gorillaz, best known as the animated alternative group from the UK, will be coming through North America for several tour dates this fall. The 19-city tour kicks off on Oct. 3 in Montreal and runs through Nov. 3, with a total of 16 stops in the U.S., including Boston's Agganis Arena on Oct. 6, Detroit's Fox Theater on Oct. 13 and Oakland's Oracle Arena on Oct. 30. The final U.S. tour date is Nov. 2 at Seattle's Key Arena.
The band has also scheduled a 10-city tour throughout Europe and six additional stops in Australia.
They are touring in support of their March 2010 album Plastic Beach, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Rock and Alternative albums charts, as well as No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Several artists contributed to the album, including Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, Lou Reed, and Mos Def. Other contributors Mick Jones and Paul Simonon previously joined the Gorillaz on tour.
The Gorillaz were created in 1998 by co-founders Damon Albarn, who was part of an alternative band called Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of a comic book called Tank Girl.
Though Albarn and Hewlett have been the only "steady" real members since 1998, there has been a total of seven fictional band members to date: Stuart "2D" Pot (lead vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Russel Hobbs (drums), Noodle (lead guitar, backing vocals), Cyborg Noodle (guitar, keyboard), as well as former members Paula Cracker (lead guitar) and Del the Ghost Rapper (guest vocals).
Their first release came in 2000 with the EP Tomorrow Comes Today, which was followed by their first full-length, self-titled album in 2001. Some of the hits that came from Gorillaz include "Clint Eastwood," "Rock the House," "Tomorrow Comes Today" and "19-2000."
Following the release of their debut studio album, which sold over 7 million copies, the band was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Successful Virtual Band. They were also invited to perform at the 2002 Brit Awards, where they also received six nominations, but took home no awards.
They received more success from their second studio album, Demon Days, which was released in 2005. Singles from the album include "Feel Good Inc.," "Dirty Harry" and "Dare."
To date, Demon Days has been certified double platinum in the U.S. It also earned five Grammy Award nominations in 2006, including 'Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals,' which they won.
Their third studio album, Plastic Beach, was released in March 2010. Though the band is well-known for their music, they have also released short audio and video clips, a 30 minute mocumentary titled Charts of Darkness, and a dub remix album titled Laika Come Home.
