Goo Goo Dolls News and Information When the Goo Goo Dolls emerged on the music scene in the early 1990s, they were accused of sounding too similar to The Replacements. They persevered, however, after being embraced by college radio and the punk scene, and fine-tuned their sound to become extremely popular within the adult alternative rock genre, among many others.

The band – singer Johnny Rzezkin, bassist Robby Takac and drummer George Tutuska (who has since been replaces by Mike Malinin) – hail from Buffalo, NY, and first formed as a cover band full of pop and classic rock & roll performances. Their earlier songs had more of a punk sound, which brought all of the comparisons to The Replacements – the sound attracted the heavy metal label Metal Blade, which got behind them to release their debut album, ““The Goo Goo Dolls.” The first album from the band to garner attention was ““Supserstar Car Wash,” released in 1993. Critical success prompted the label to give them a bigger budget, which impelled the bands real breakthrough album, ““A Boy Named Goo.”

The ballad ““Name” off of ““Goo” was first played by an L.A. rock station, but caught on and was eventually released throughout the nation, sitting on the top of the singles charts for some time. Another ballad came with ““Iris,” written for the 1998 film ““City of Angels.” This marked their real change into a more adult contemporary genre – they became a fixture for easy listening stations across the country. More commercial success came with ““Dizzy Up the Girl,” probably still fueled by the immense success of ““Iris.” ““Dizzy” included the singles ““Slide,” ““Dizzy” and ““Black Balloon.”

In recent years, the bands sound has become slightly edgier, although nothing close to the original Goo Goo Dolls. The albums ““Gutterflower” charted the single ““Here is Gone,” and 2006s ““Let Love In” includes the title track and his single ““Stay with You.”

The band has always been known for touring, and they continue to do so – they co-headlined with Counting Crows last summer, and have stayed on the road almost non-stop ever since, bringing their infectious blend of pop and rock to all of the fans that have kept them on the top of the charts.
