Gladys Knight, best known for her legendary and throaty vocals with the group Gladys Knight and the Pips, was born May 28th, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of eight in 1952, Knight made her debut on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour when the televised performance won her a prize on the show. Soon after that, the 'Pips' were formed with her brother and sister, Merald and Brenda, three of her cousins, Elenor and William Guest and Edward Patten and friend, Langston George.
The songs that typified the 60's and 70's in America will always remember Ms. Knight's long and historic period with the Pips. "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (1966), "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye) (1972), "Midnight Train to Georgia" (1973), "I've Got To Use My Imagination" (1974) and "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" (1974).
Although the Pips were considered a less than famous act alongside the superstar of Motown, Diana Ross, for whom the Pips opened on many a tour, Ross is said to have kicked them off the bill when the audience response to the Pips outshone the response that she was getting.
In the early 1980's, Johnny Mathis asked Ms. Knight to record with him. The two duets, "When A Child Is Born" and, "The Lord's Prayer" showed the world that Gladys Knight was a singing sensation all by herself.
Knight officially began her solo career and said goodbye to the Pips. Her show business connections formed while with the Pip's led to Knight's recording of the title track for the James Bond move, "License to Kill", which hit number 6 in the UK on the Billboard charts.
Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" rose to number 1 on the R&B album chart and featured the hits, "Superwoman" and "Men", with Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. Ms. Knights fourth solo album, "Just For You", is certified gold and won the 1995 Grammy Award for the Best R&B Album.
During that same successful year, she also experienced the tragic loss of her eldest son, Jimmy III, when he was found dead at the age of 36. He died in his sleep.
Knight joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1997. She is the creator and director of the Mormon-themed choir, Saints Unified Voices. In the last two years Gladys Knight has joined with many other great artists for various causes. In 2008 she joined Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black and Ben Stiller on American Idol to raise money for charity. Last year she sang "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" at Michael Jackson's funeral.
