Girl Talk: Lawsuit waiting to happen or musical genius?
Gregg Michael Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk, began experimenting with music mash-ups at his high school in a suburb of Pittsburgh. He released three albums "Secret Diary" (2002); "Unstoppable" (2004) and "Night Ripper" (2006) before dropping out of college so he could focus on music full time.
Throughout his musical career, Girl Talk has been under the Illegal Art label. For his fourth album, "Feed the Animals" (2008), Girl Talk asked for a donation of any size. However, all his other albums have been released completely free of charge on the Illegal Art website.
As far as his name, Gillis decided on the name Girl Talk "to just stir things up a little within the small scene I was operating from. I came from a more experimental background and there were some very overly serious, borderline academic type electronic musicians. I wanted to pick a name that they would be embarrassed to play with. You know Girl Talk sounded exactly the opposite of a man playing a laptop, so that's what I chose."
"All Day," Girl Talk's fifth album, was released in November 2010. Like his previous albums, it is available on Illegal Art's website free of charge.
