The Gigantour is hitting the road this April and May, bringing sounds of heavy metal music to fans across the country. Megadeth and In Flames are the co-headliners for the outing.
The tour is an outlet for Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine to bring together high-energy rock bands to perform together as an alternative to Ozzfest. This year the tour will feature the headliners plus Children of Bodon, Job For A Cowboy and High on Fire.
Megadeth is known as a metal touring force. They have shared the stage with the likes of Iron Maiden and Anthrax since their inception in 1983. When Mustaine put the tour together for its first run in 2005, he tapped bands that he thought to be the best band hes played with during his time with Megadeth.
Megadeth is enough of a draw to bring millions of fans on their own. The rockers are pioneers in the thrash metal movement, finding critical and commercial success along the way. The group really came into its own with "Countdown to Extinction" in 1992. The album debuted at No.2 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts and found mainstream his with ''Symphony of Destruction" and "Sweating Bullets." Most recently, the group released "United Abominations" in 2007 - it is the bands eleventh studio album and was a critical success.
Mustaines first lineup included Megadeth, Dream Theater, Anthrax, Fear Factory, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore on the main stage and Life of Agony, Symphony X, Dry Kill Logic and Bobaflex on the second stage.
The following year, Megadeth, Lamb of God, Opeth, and Arch Enemy filled the first stage while Overkill, Into Eternity, Sanctity and The SmashUp were on the sceondary. In 2006, the tour extended to Australia for three stops, featuring Megadeth, Soulfly, Arch Enemy and Caliban. Last year, Gigantour kept the tour in Australia, featuring Megadeth, Statix-X, Lacuna Couil and Bring Me The Horizon.
His year, the tour has expanded to the U.K. with Megadeth, Job For A Cowboy and Evile. In the U.S., the shorter lineup was announced and explained that Mustaine wanted each band to be able to put on a show, so a smaller number of acts were preferable.
While the tour is relatively new, it certainly has a following, and merchandise to show - "Gigantour CD 2005" was released in 2005. The collection includes two discs, and DVD was also released.
