G. Love, AKA Garrett Dutton III, and his band, the Special Sauce, have been playing together for some time, and earned fans that have developed from a cult following to mainstream success.
Dutton grew up in Philadelphia, and began playing the guitar at age 8. He was influenced by Bob Dylan and hip-hop artists like Run-DMC and Beastie Boys. He played solo in Philadelphia, and relocated to Boston where he met up with drummer Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens." Bassist Jim "Jimi Jazz" Prescott soon joined the fun, and they began playing all over New England.
In 1999, G. Love used an early version of Jack Johnsons "Rodeo Clowns" in the album Philadelphonic. At the time, Johnson was an unknown artist, but as he rose to fame, he used the track on his 2003 album "On and On." The two have formed quite a working relationship - Johnson signed Dutton to his record label, "Brushfire Records."
Throughout the careers of Dutton and the band, they released seven albums - a self-titled debut, in 1994, followed by "Coast to Coast Motel" in 1995, "Yeah, its That Easy" in 1997, "Philadelphonic" in 199 and "Electric Mile" in 2001. After a best-of compilation from Sony in 2002, they released two more on Brushfire Records, most recently "Lemonade" in 2006. Dutton also released "Oh Yeah" on 2007, a solo album off of his Philadelphonic label.
While the group isnt known for amazing commercial successes, they have expanded from their cult following in Philadelphia, mostly based on the word-of-mouth from their amazing live shows. As a result of the performances, they have garnered much critical acclaim and take their show on the road regularly!
