The 1960's would not be the same were it not for Frankie Valli's hits, including "Walk Like A Man", "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry" to name only a few. This year his dates begin in California in early February. He will tour through the west and the mid-west until June and then play a show at the Wolftrap in Virginia on July 15 before heading back to the mid-west.
Frankie Valli's career started long before the Four Seasons. As Frank Valley he recorded his first commercial hit "My Mother's Eyes". The following year he formed a band called "The Variatones" who eventually come to be "The Four Lovers." Their first LP "You're The Apple Of My Eye" was released in 1956 and became number 62 on the Billboard charts.
In 1958, while performing a show in Baltimore with a band called "The Royal Teens" they met guitar player Bob Gaudio. The "Teens" were riding a wave of success for a song called the "Short Shorts" co-written by the then 15-year-old Gaudio.
"The Four Lovers" were having minimal success. Gaudio eventually joined their group, which did not seem to bring them any more acclaim, even though they had started working with Bob Crewe, the producer who can be credited for making their 'doo-wop' sound even more commercial.
Upon failing an audition for a gig at a bowling alley, "The Four Lovers" decided to take something from the effort by renaming their band after the bowling alley, which was called "The Four Seasons". Was it in the name? Who can say. Shortly thereafter, the group was signed to Vee Jay Records. "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Walk Like A Man", "Candy Girl", "Ain't That A Shame" and a Christmas album released in 1962 with a rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming To Town", all under the guidance of Crewe, made the band the definitive pop band of the '60's.
With the British Invasion and 'Beatlemania' on the rise in '64, "The Four Seasons" were the only act to have a hit before, during and after the Beatles rose to mega-stardom. "Rag Doll", "Ronnie", "Big Man In Town", "Save It For Me", "Bye, Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)", and "Girl Come Running" were a few of their hits. With the onslaught of Motown, the end of the '60s saw a decline in the "The Four Season's" fan base.
In the mid-1970's, "The Four Seasons" enjoyed a come back with "My Eyes Adored You" which made the charts in 1975. The Warner Bros. Records' release "The Four Seasons Story" became a gold record, selling over one million copies. Valli's 'Crewe-produced' solo single, "Swearin' to God' made it to #6 of that same year.
A musical called "The Jersey Boys" based on the lives of The Four Seasons, directed by Des McAnuff (Tommy, 700 Sundays) premiered in California in 2005. The play became a Broadway hit in 2006, winning four Tony Awards.
Franki Valli has never stopped touring the US with his band. The Four Seasons consists of Todd Fournier, Brian Brigham, Brandon Brigham and Landon Beard, who back up Franki Valli on lead vocals.
