Before you knew the band's name you knew their catchy song "Pumped Up Kicks." It was also the band's first song and their big break into stardom, including a multi-album deal that was offered before the first album had been completed. Now, the band is celebrating the release of their debut album and of course their breakthrough song with an international tour that brings them to North America in late May.

The Foster the People tour kicks off with a two-night gig at New York City's Rumsey Playfield on May 29-30 and runs through July 7 at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Additional tour dates include June 10 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., The Fillmore in Detroit on June 16, Chicago's Congress Theatre June 20-21, the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley on June 29 and the Comerica Theatre in Phoenix on July 6.

Foster the People began with Mark Foster, a struggling musician and commercial jingle writer. After graduation, Foster moved in with his uncle in Los Angeles to work on a music career. Once there, he took up odd jobs, networked and eventually struggled with drug addiction. After nearly a decade of dabbling in various genres, Foster met Mark Pontium, a drummer who left his band in 2009 to begin a band with Foster. They were soon joined by Foster's longtime friend Cubbie Fink, a bassist.

The band's breakthrough came soon after with the song "Pumped Up Kicks," which Foster wrote and recorded. From the band having the song as a free release on their website to having a signed multi-album contract was only a matter of months. As their success happened so rapidly, the band hadn't even material that could appear on their debut album. Over the next three months, the band wrote new material and then began touring.

Foster the People had trouble finding a venue that would let them play because they had no touring experience, but their break came at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2011. Their debut album, Torches, which was released in May 2011, took the band to the top. Soon they were appearing on several late night shows, watching their album chart in both the Alternative and Rock categories and selling out a major U.S. and European tour.

Torches was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Other popular songs to come from the album include "Helena Beat," "Call It What You Want," "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" and "Houdini."
