When "Flight of the Conchords" finishes its second season in May, the show's duo of the same name will head out on the road to bring their brand of musical comedy to fans all over the country.
Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, billing themselves as "Formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo a capella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo," have become famous in recent years for their BBC radio and America television series with the band's moniker. They showcase a refreshing brand of witty observation set to the tune of acoustic sounds.
McKenzie and Clement came together at Victoria University of Wellington and first performed as part of the five-man group "So You're a Man," which had a loyal following in New Zealand and Australia. They performed on local TV in 2000, and eventually moved to the festival circuit - they spent the next several years building a name for themselves with unique studio and live performances.
The band got their international break when HBO gave them a Friday night stand-up comedy series "One Night Stand." In 2007, the HBO approved their own series, "Flight of the Conchords," which currently shows on The Comedy Network. The series documents the duo's quest for success as a band in America and chronicles their daily lives in New York City. The band's songs are woven into the plot of each episode, which also features a multitude of other comedians.
The second season of "Flight of the Conchords" began in January of 2009, and they are using innovative technologies this time around - after each episode, the featured song becomes a new single on iTunes. Those songs will be also be featured on a second full-length studio album, which includes ten songs from the series and five more original tracks.
In April, the boys take their show on the road for more than just a festival appearance - they are headlining stops throughout America.
