The Flaming Lips, known for their awesomely entertaining shows, are living up to their legacy this year with a multi-city tour starting in April. On the heels of their high octane headlining appearance at South by Southwest this month, the band is basking in stellar reviews as Wayne Coyne floats across the US in a bubble of psychedelic success. They will play in Charlottesville, VA, on April 15 before they head off to Poughkeepsie and Ithaca, NY. After several shows in the mid-west, they will return to the East Coast for a final show in New York City on the 26th of July on the Central Park Summer Stage. They will also play at the Bonnaroo Festival on June 11th.
Don't miss these vintage rock performers who come complete with glitter, costumes and, yes, a plastic human-sized bubble that floats out into the audience with lead singer Wayne Coyne intact; he just might pop out on you!
The band has announced the upcoming release of "The Flaming Lips, Along With Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches doing 'The Dark Side of the Moon'" will be available for sale on Limited Edition vinyl beginning April 17, 2010. In this current phase, the 'Lips' are appearing frequently with Stardeath and White Dwarfs, who are their full time roadies. Somewhere in there, Coyne's nephew joins in as both roadie and musician. Currently the band is comprised of Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Steven Drozd and Kliph Scurlock.
Originally from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the band formed in 1983. After many albums they signed with Warner Brothers in 1993 and had their first hit, 'She Don't Use Jelly'. Their first gold album came in 2007 ("The Soft Bulletin"), after decades of work and touring.
2007 was a pivotal year for the band. The 'Lips' released their first live concert DVD, 'UFO's at the Zoo: The Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City on August 7, 2007', establishing them as multi-media giants. They were also featured in several commercials that aired in 2007 (Mitsubishi, Range Rover) and another Merrill Lynch commercial in 2009, which helped to further their imprint on the listening and viewing audience.
The band has proudly never been commercial and has maintained the respect of critics. Known for their elaborate live concerts and wild titles, they have consistently used their talents to dazzle the masses. The 2008 release of "Christmas on Mars", their full-length feature film, was another addition to their already off the charts live shows. Written and co-directed by Wayne Coyne, the movie was screened at rock festivals across America of that year and then released on DVD.
The 2009 release of 'Embryonic' was supported by their performance on the The Colbert Report. They took that opportunity to announce they would stream their album on their website prior to its official release on October 13, which proves their undying loyalty to the crowds. Colbert himself is one of their biggest fans.
When someone asked Coyne what instrument he plays, his answer was, "the recording studio." At this stage in the band's history, they have shown their mastery over the elements, making this band a one of a kind experience no one can copy. Fans, especially from their native state of Oklahoma, appreciate their 'spacey' lyrics and colorful musical twists. In March of 2009, Oklahoma's Governor, Brad Henry, signed an executive order naming The Flaming Lip's "Do You Realize" the official rock song of Oklahoma.
