Erykah Badu is traveling this spring to support three albums she has been developing over the past four years.
Badu is known for her part in the rise of neo soul and her original sense of both music and fashion. She has always embraced her culture, wearing colorful head wraps and tribal designs early in her career, and continues to do so.
The singer grew up in Texas and recorded a 19-song demo while working a number of minimum wage jobs after dropping out of Grambling State University to focus on music. The move paid off, and she released Baduizm in early 1997. The collection was a hit, including the single "On & On," which won Grammy Awards in 1998. The album went triple platinum, and placed her at the center of the neo soul genre with her jazzy, bass-heavy sound and sweet voice of Billie Holiday.
Badu next released the live album "Live," which included the hit "Tyrone." She collaborated with The Roots" for "You Got Me" the following year, and scored a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Badu stepped away from the limelight to be a mother (the childs father was Andre 3000 from OutKast), and didnt release another album until "Mamas Gun" in 2000. The album included the single "Bag Lady," and she also recorded a track with then-boyfriend Common, "Love of My Life (And Ode to Hip-Hop)."
Badu suffered from writers block for a few years in the early 2000s, but put out "Worldwide Underground EP" in September of 2003, which was recorded after a tour organized specifically to help her write. The EP garnered four Grammy Nominations.
The singer took more time off, and in 2007 revealed that she had three collections in the works, including "New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)" and a second installation of the album. Currently, shes supporting the single "Honey."
