Diana Ross announced the 'More Today Than Yesterday Greatest Hits Tour' in March of this year. Arguably one of the most famous women in the music world today, the Diva of Motown promises a new set-list, new stage designs and costume changes that will surprise and delight all. The multi-city spring tour starts in Boston, Mass., on May 15th. She will tour the eastern seaboard throughout May and will then go to the mid-west before heading down south. The tour wraps up in June in Saratoga, California.
Born in Michigan in 1944, Ross was singing back up vocals for a girl group before she finished high school. At her mother's insistence, Ross was made to graduate from Cass Technical High School in 1962, so that she could have something to fall back on if the music didn't work out. That group, The Primettes, consisted of singers Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Betty McGlown and Diana Ross.
In 1961, the quartet met Barry Gordy who immediately signed them to the label he founded, Motown Records. It was there they became the infamous Supremes. At the time, Ross was still working on her high school degree; she was just 15 years old. By 1969, the Supremes had racked up mega successes, with "Where Did Our Love Go?" "Baby Love" and "Stop In The Name of Love", to mention only a few.
Diana Ross started her solo career in 1970. With a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", set in an 'Ashford and Simpson' arrangement, Ross had her first number 1 pop single, which soon became a gold record. Barry Gordy promoted the idea that a Motown singer could cross over into the world of pop music years earlier. Ross's unprecedented success as a solo artist proved him right.
In 1971 Diana starred in the film "Lady Sings The Blues," which told the story of Billie Holiday. The phenomenal success of the picture brought Miss Ross a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination in 1972. In 2004, she staged a successful European and American Tour and returned to the Billboard charts with, "I've Got Crush On You', recorded with Rod Stewart.
Although she fell off the entertainment grid for several years following this tour, Ross was presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from BET in 2007. In that same year she was recognized by The Kennedy Center and named one of the honorees. Her hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" came in second place in a Motown generated International poll in 2008.
Ross released an extended version of the classic, "Touch Me In The Morning" album at the beginning of this year, which will be supported by the "More Today Than Yesterday" tour.
