Diana Krall News and Information
Posted 3/26/2009
Singer/pianist Diana Krall got her start early in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. She started piano lessons at the age of four, and by fifteen she was performing locally in restaurants. After hooking up with legendary artists Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton, she jump started her career which now spans over twelve jazz-inspired albums and two DVDs.

Krall was inspired by her father's record collection as a child, and she won a competition for a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music. She released her first album in 1993, "Stepping Out," which was recorded with John Clayton and Hamilton. Her third, "All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio" was nominated for a Grammy award and sat atop the Billboard Jazz Charts for seventy weeks. "Love Scenes" in 1997 was also a hit, which brought her together with Russell Malone on guitar and Christian McBride on bass.

"When I Look Into Your Eyes" from 1999 brought Krall international acclaim, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and was the first jazz album to be nominated for the Album of the Year in a quarter of a century.

"The Look of Love," released in 2001, was certified platinum by the RIAA - it went quadruple platinum in Canada. The title track, the single from Casino Royale, hit No. 22 on the Adult Contemporary Billboard cart.

Krall has toured significantly throughout her career, including an outing with Tony Bennett in 2000 and time on the Lillith Fair Tour. In 2001, Krall traveled again and recorded "Diana Krall - Live in Paris," which went to the top of the Billboard Jazz chart. The album featured a number of covers, including Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" and Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are."

In 2002 the singer married fellow artist Elvis Costello, which brought a new sound to her art - she began composing her own songs and released "The Girl in the Other Room" in 2004. In 2006 with "From This Moment On," Krall went from a minimalist sound to include a larger ensemble.
