Depeche Mode News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Depeche Mode has embarked on a "Tour of the Universe," the group's first-ever stadium tour that includes shows in 21 countries across Europe and will then feature stops in North and South America.

The English synth-pop group formed in 1980 and over the years they became one of the most successful and influential bands of the New Wave era, selling over 75 million albums worldwide.

Depeche Mode began as a quintet and has since become a trio of Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andrew Flechter. While they found modest success with their initial albums "Speak and Spell," "A Broken Frame" and "Construction Time Again," they found worldwide acclaim with "Some Great Reward" in 1984, which included the hit "People are People." Around this time, the group became more associated with a gothic subculture in America than the new wave movement they fostered in England, so they held an interesting position worldwide.

The group released a number of influential albums over the next few years. In 1990 the album "Violator" hit the streets, which brought them into the mainstream with "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence." The group continued to release albums with success, and have amassed over 12 studio albums, three live albums, 8 compilations, 49 singles, 10 video albums and 56 music videos.

All the while, Depeche Mode has impacted a number of groups after them, including heavy metal groups such as Fear Factory, and Marilyn Manson, Tori Amos and Johnny Cash. Most recently, "Enjoy the Silence" was covered by Coldplay as an alternate video for "Viva la Vida."
