News and Information

The Dave Matthews Band is scheduled to release their next album, currently untitled, on June 2nd, but a massive tour begins in advance in April at Madison Square Garden.

A slew of supporting acts will be joining DMB on the road through October, including Jason Mraz, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, The Hold Steady, Donavon Frankenreiter, and G. Love & Special Sauce. The Madison Square Garden show will be opened by The Roots.

Despite the loss of long-time bandmate and friend, LeRoi Moore, DMB continued to go strong on their fall 2008 tour, which concluded at Madison Square Garden on September 10. They are looking forward to the next CD release, with most of the material written on the road, and their next tour.

Matthews and Co. last released "Live a Piedmont Park," a 3-CD and 2-DVD collection. They traveled behind the Live Trax series - an 11-show set of live performances, mostly available online. In July of last year, Starbucks released a nine-track compilation of the series, including highlights of the first nine collections.

In 2008, the group had brought on impressive support for their perennial summer outing, including State Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Black Crowes, Paolo Nutini, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Gomez, Ingrid Michaelson, Willie Nelson, TR3, Eli Young Band, Robert Earl Keen and O.A.R.

Dave Matthews Band Background Information

DMB was formed in Charlottesville, Va., by singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Matthews. The large band includes a number of instruments that have created a sound special that few other collectives have mastered. The group includes saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bassist Stefan Lessard, electric violinist Boyd Tinsley and drummer Carter Beauford. Keyboardist Butch Taylor is often with the band, and trumpet player Rashawn Ross was added to the band last year.

The bands popularity rose from touring in Virginia with its first three demo songs, "The Song That Jane Likes," "Recently" and "Tripping Billies." The sound became extremely popular in the area, and released its first album; "Remember Two Things" was released from an independent label in 19993. The album was instantly popular in colleges throughout the country.

In 1994, the band released 'Under the Table and Dreaming," which really catapulted the band to stardom. The album included the singles "What Would You Say," "Satellite" and "Ants Marching." The next effort, "Crash," brought critical success with the commercial. In addition to finding hits with "Crash into Me," "Too Much" and "Trippin Billies," the band scored five Grammy Award nominations and a win for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for "So Much to Say."

After two successful albums, the band turned to live releases, for which it has been known. "Recently" was a live EP released in 1997, and that same year came "Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95." "Before These Crowded Streets" was the next studio album, which featured the darker single "Dont Drink the Water," plus the uplifting "Stay (Wasting Time)" and ballad "Crush." That same year "Live at Luther College" was released - it was collaboration between Matthews and guitarist Tim Reynolds.

DMB hit a dark spot in 2000, and the planned album with producer Steve Lillywhite reflected this. Matthews songwriting was darker than ever, and the bands attention seemed to wander. The sessions failed and the relationship with Lillywhite was terminated. The band then released "Every Day," which included hit singles "I Did It," "Every Day "and "The Space Between," which brought them even further mainstream. In 2001, the Lillywhite Sessions were leaked on the internet, which pleased the fans that found DMBs sound in "Everyday" to be too pop-oriented. The album was eventually released as "Busted Stuff."

Touring has clearly always been a passion for the band. While the band, known for the jam sessions during songs, tend to perform for massive crowds, Matthews also likes to tour in more intimate areas, such as his acoustic tours with Reynolds, where he was able to interact with the audience.
