Dark Star Orchestra (DSO), the eternally touring band, is continuing the trend it is famous for: live shows. DSO is giving their fans a plethora of good vibes and great concerts all across the US this year, as usual. They will be bobbing around the west coast well into early May before they venture out west to Colorado in May followed by a slate of East Coast shows into June.
On June 5th they will play the 'Mountain Jam VI' festival with many favorites, like Gov't Mule, The Avett Brothers and even Toots and the Maytals, to name a few. If it is one thing that this eternally touring band is, it's entertaining to say the least.
They used to say that if you remembered any Grateful Dead show you went to, then you must not have had that much fun. Not so for these boys who obviously have remembered everything about the original band, and with respect, have re-created everything about the culture and style of the Dead scene as it once was and would be were Jerry Garcia still alive.
The band performs live shows based on old set lists that were once performed by the Grateful Dead. They have played approximately 1700 shows nationally and worldwide since their inception in 1997. They are meticulously detailed about recreating the dead experience line for line and have been critically acclaimed for this skill.
DSO has as much a claim on the Grateful Dead legacy at this point as any of the original surviving members of the Dead. At the end of every show, the band announces the date and the venue that the original show performed by the real Dead once took place. Kind of eerie, right? USA Today raves about this band, with one reporter writing, "It is channeling the Dead."
Members of the original Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, Billy Kreutzmann, and others, have appeared on stage with them from time to time as well. On average the band performs 200 shows a year and continues to develop its fan base worldwide.
In the spring of 2005, co-founder of DSO died of a heart attack on April 24th. Eventually they replaced him with Rob Barraco in 2007. In 2009, John Kadlecik joined Further, which was new at the time. Further is comprised of some of the original Grateful Dead members, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. He officially left DSO on November 16, 2009, and was replaced by Jeff Mattson of the Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Mattson.
The current members of DSO are: Jeff Mattson, Rob Eaton, Kevin Rosen, Lisa Mackey, Rob Koritz, Dino English and Rob Barraco.
