The amazing British star Corinne Bailey Rae is currently in the US touring. For the first time in three years, she is back with her new album, "The Sea", and a multi-city tour that will also take her through parts of Canada. Shows kick off April 9th marking the beginning of the must see tour that includes several appearances with the 2010 Lilith Fair, as well.
Bailey Rae will perform in the mid-west with a show in Chicago on April 22 before she starts to head east. On May 13th she is scheduled to perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. She will perform in Baltimore, Md., at the Ram's Head Live on May 14th.
There is no question that the young singing star has somehow found a way to pick up where Billy Holiday left off. Bailey Rae's unique interpretation of jazz chord progressions, guitar playing, and lyrics that address contemporary subject matter, are groundbreaking; one cannot help but think that Corinne is what Holiday might have been if she were composing today.
English born to a black Kittitian father and a white English mother, Corinne and her three sisters endured racial taunts growing up in Leeds. When others called them 'Pakis' (one of the most common racist terms in the UK), Corinne says she would shout back at them, "At least if you're going to do it, get it right."
This speaks a lot to her character. Although her doe-like eyes and fragile-looking frame make her appearance seem delicate, she has the kind of strength inside her that can withstand the emotions that come from being an overnight success, as well as from the death of her husband in 2008 - the subject matter for much of the material on her new album.
Going to church growing up turned out to be illuminating for her in many ways; it was there she discovered she could sing. She eventually starting her own all girl indie band called, "Helen." She admits she was devastated when the project later had to fold due to the pregnancy of one of her band mates.
As an English major in University, she worked part time as a hatcheck girl in a jazz club. She was drawn to the style of music, and often was allowed to get on stage with the artists and sing. She learned to sing and play the guitar and began to develop the sound she has today.
In 2004 she was approached by Mark Hall (The Artful Dodger) to appear on his new album, "better luck next time," which he recorded under the name of The stiX.
"Young and Foolish" was the result. Released in 2005, the recording was immediately noticed by some major record labels.
Rae's debut album, "Corinne Bailey Rae" in 2006 hit number one in the UK Billboard charts, selling 1.9 million copies. It was among the biggest selling albums in the UK with over 327,000 downloads. "Like A Star" was the album's featured hit single. She followed this with "Put Your Records On", which rose to number two in the UK and sold over 945,000 downloads. She went on a yearlong tour and started to win music awards. "Best UK Newcomer" and "Best UK Female" are among the titles she won in that year. Meanwhile, her self-titled album went Platinum two times over.
Bailey Rae's newest album, "The Sea" was released in January of this year. After the death of her husband, the singer was incognito for two years. The long awaited return is promising and positive with more great original music from Corinne Bailey Rae.
