Coheed and Cambria is known for producing concept albums that tell the tale of The Armory Wars, and somehow finding commercial success with the experimentation involved with the album.
In 1995, Claudio Sanchez on vocals and guitar, Nate Kelley on drums and Jon Carleo on bass formed the band Shabutie. The group experimented with a number of sounds, including heavy metal, acoustic rock, punk and funk. Eventually, Kelley and Carleo left the band and Michael Todd and Chris Pennie joined, and Travis Stever re-joined the group after early work with Shabutie, and they formed Coheed and Cambria in 2001.
The concept for the bands album came from a science fiction story Sanchez wrote entitled "The Bag.On.Line.Adventures," which was renamed into "The Armory Wars." In 2002, the first album of the collection was released "The Second Stage Turbine Blade." The album had a hardcore influence, and scored success with "Devil in Jersey City" that often found them with comparisons to progressive rockers Rush.
After massive touring to drum up a fan base, the group released "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3,"including the singles "A Favor House Atlantic" and "Blood Red Summer." The boys continued to tour extensively, including an appearance on the Warped Tour. The next release was "Good Apollo, Im Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness," the bands first release from a major label, Columbia. The album had a more progressive-rock sound, including a number of guitar solos and longer tracks. Hit singles included "Welcome Home," "The Suffering" and "Ten Speed (of Gods Blood and Burial)."
After a lineup change, the band released "Good Apollo, I, Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow" in October 2007, debuting at No. 6 on the Billboard Charts. The first single, "The Running Free" was successful, and they traveled on the equally successful Warped Tour with Clutch and The Fall of Troy.
