"Doo-Wops & Hooligans," Bruno Mars' first studio album, debuted in October 2010. It features the popular songs "Grenade" and "Just the Way You Are," which took home the 2011 Grammy Award for 'Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.'
Bruno Mars, a.k.a. Peter Gene Hernandez, was born into a family of entertainers. His mother, a Philippine native, and his father, a Brooklyn native of Puerto Rican descent, met in Hawaii where they had each moved with dreams of performing. Hi father was a percussionist and his mother was a hula dancer at the show where they met.
Hernandez's father gave him the nickname "Bruno" because of his resemblance to the chunky professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. By the time that Bruno was 5, in 1990, he had earned the title of "Little Elvis" and was featured in a movie when he was 7.
After his high school graduation in 2003, Mars moved to L.A. to pursue his music career and was signed to Motown Records a year later. Though the recording contract didn't work out, Mars was introduced to a songwriter with the label who later introduced Mars to his now-manager at Atlantic Records.
Before Mars was able to make it as a solo artist, he worked as a songwriter for artists like Sean Kingston, Brandy and Flo Rida. His breakout moment came after contributing vocals to B.o.B.'s "Nothin' on You" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire."
In October 2010, Mars released his first solo studio album, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. One of the popular songs "Just the Way You Are" also earned Mars his first Grammy Award for 'Best Male Vocal Pop Performance.'
