Boyz II Men News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Boyz II Men are the most successful R&B group of all time. They ushered in a rebirth of the Motown sound with their own flares, to amazing acclaim - their four-part harmonies are behind three of the longest-running number-one pop singles in RIAA history.
Nathan Morris, Michael McCary, Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris and Marc Nelson came together at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia (Nelson left after the first album to pursue a solo career). The group idolized New Edition, and even named themselves after one of the R&B bands songs. The group got a break by performing a New Edition song a capella for Michael Bivins, member of the group. He eventually helped the boys to sign with Motown Records.
The bands first album was "Cooleyhighharmony,” released in 1991 and executive produced by Bivins. The band soon had a style all their own, dubbed "hip hop doo wop.” The first single was "Motownphilly,” and the second was "Its So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” In the end, the album sold over 9 million copies. "End of the Road” was a single released in 1992 for the Eddie Murphy film "Boomerang.” The single remained on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 13 weeks, breaking all previous records.
The band became known for their multiple-lead arrangement. Wanye Morris had a more harsh tenor, while Stockton had a more smooth tenor - Nathan Morris held his own at baritone, and McCary was known for his deep bass, used in spoken-word aspects of the song. Each member had their own style, but none was more important than the other - an interesting prospect for a young male collective.
The group was clearly at the top of its game, and the album "II” solidified the status. Hit singles from the album included "On Bended Knee,” "Ill Make Love to You” and "Water Runs Dry.” "Ill Make Love to You” broke the record for consecutive weeks at No.1 with 14 weeks. The album sold an amazing 12 million copies in the United States.
In 1995, the band lent their harmonies and style to a number of other artists collections. They performed with LL Cool J on "Hey Lover,” and more popularly with Mariah Carey on "One Sweet Day” for her album "Daydream.” The album broke the groups previous record, spending 16 weeks on the top of the charts. The single was also nominated for "Record of the Year” and "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals” Grammy Awards.
"Evolution” was released in 1999, which included the hit single "Four Seasons of Loneliness,” and also the track "A Song for Mama,” written for the hit film "Soul Food.” Health problems began to stifle the group - Wanye Morris developed a polyp on his vocal cords, and McCary was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis, which limited his ability to dance.
The band proceeded to release a number of albums before McCary left the group in 2003, due to his scoliosis. The band then took a hiatus for about a year, and released "Throwback, Vol. 1” and then "The Remedy” in 2007.
The band has influenced a number of successful groups, including Soul for Real, BLACKstreet, All 4 One, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge and Az Yet. Sometimes the group is also credited with beginning the "boy band” craze, as Lou Pearlman saw the popularity of the band and kept that in mind when forming groups such as The Backstreet Boys and *Nsync.
BoyzIIMen has clearly dominated the R&B game, especially with their influence over so many bands that have risen after they slowed recording. This band is still an amazing force to see live, with an incredible catalogue of hits that bands all over the world adore!
