In contrast to the clean-cut, vanilla persona that Bob Saget earned on "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos," his stand-up routine is anything but! This fall, Saget is bringing his raunchy blend of comedy to the U.S. and Canada with stops from Sept. 24 at the California Theatre in San Bernadino through Dec. 19 at the Winspear Center for Music in Edmonton, A.B.
Along the way, Saget also has performances scheduled at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 8; the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City on Oct. 9; the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, N.J. on Oct. 15; and the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Nov. 5. Bob Saget has also scheduled a gig at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on Jan. 15, 2011.
His most recent solo work was the HBO Comedy special "Bob Saget: That Ain't Right" in 2007, though he regularly narrates the popular television show "How I Met Your Mother."
Though he's best known for his roles as Danny Tanner on "Full House" or the host of "America's Funniest Home Videos," Bob Saget actually grew up aspiring to be a doctor.
During high school in his hometown of Philadelphia, Saget was encouraged by a teacher to pursue a career that would allow him to be creative. After graduating, he decided to go to Temple University's film school. Once there, he created a black-and-white film called "Through Adam's Eyes," which received an award of merit from the Student Academy Awards.
From there, Saget decided to enroll at the University of Southern California for graduate school, but changed his mind a few days later. Eventually, he began performing stand-up comedy and appearing in a handful of television shows before settling down to co-host a CBS morning television show called The Morning Program in 1987.
Ironically, the same year he was cast as Danny Tanner, a morning talk show host in the hit TV show "Full House," in which he played the part of a widowed husband with three young girls to raise. The show also featured Tanner's brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis, a rock musician, and his friend, Joey Gladstone, a comedian, to move in with him and help raise the girls.
"Full House" was a huge success and lasted from 1987 through 1995. Also during this time, Bob had been snagged to host "America's Funniest Home Videos," which was also a success. He stayed with that through 1997, after which he appeared in various television shows and devoted more time to stand-up comedy.
In 2007, he debuted the HBO comedy special "That Ain't Right" and in 2009, he tried his hand in the sitcom "Surviving Suburbia," though it only lasted one season.
