The Blue Man group might easily be one of the most recognizable performance groups out there today - mostly due to their blue faces and black clothing. The performances from the group, however, are something that few people would expect.
The trio, Phil Standon, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman, perform shows that include a lot of audience participation, intense lighting techniques and props that often times require a "poncho" section in the front row, which protects fans from the food, paint, and other substances that are often sprayed from the stage. The shows are supported by a soundtrack of rock music, with an emphasis on percussion.
The artists do not speak during the show, and rarely show any sign of emotion other than in the eyes. They communicate by intense eye contact and minimal gestures. The shows have a number of themes, including innocence, self-conscience, outsiders, plus science and technology and information overload.
The group was formed in the 1980s in New York City when the trio staged a number of unusual events for people on the street. They caught the attention of a clubs artistic director and got a full-length show which was reviewed by The New York Times and eventually led the artists to an off-Broadway show at the Astor Place Theatre.
Since they have become more popular, a number of mainstream artists have helped them on their recording endeavors, including Dave Matthews, Tracy Bonham and Gavin Rossdale, all featured in the 2003 album "The Complex."
In addition to New York City, the tribe now performs in Boston, Chicago, Orlando and Las Vegas.
