Black Sabbath kicked loose rock that's still setting off avalanches of creativity across the musical landscape. Their phenomenal first four albums Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Vol. 4 remain the clearest articulations of heavy metal vocabulary to date. Bassist Geezer Butler, the man responsible for the lion's share of Sabbath's early hits, focused his lyrics on social ills, self-destructive behavior, fantasy and the occult, setting forth the primary concerns which continue to preoccupy Metal bands from velocity addicts Venom and Napalm Death to sludge fiends such as Monster Magnet. Lead guitarist Tony Iommi's loose tunings revolutionized the craft of electric guitar by uncovering unsuspected fuzzy depths. And, of course, Ozzy Osbourne's manic live performances introduced an element of pure theatricality that remains central to Metal's identity. Beginning with '75's Sabotage, Sabbath's credibility has been constantly imperiled by failed experiments in Prog-ish rock. With the exception of the Ronnie James Dio albums of the early '80s (Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules), the moments when Sabbath play up to their ability have been few and far between. Perhaps aware of this themselves, they convinced Ozzy to return to the fold in the late '90s for a series of penitential performances focusing on their glorious early material.

In 1994, the Nativity In Black tribute album was released, which featured appearances from all four original members. In 1997, the original line-up of Butler, Iommi, Ward and Osbourne re-formed to play two live shows and released a double live album, Reunion. It featured two new studio tracks and made it into the US Top 20. The original lineup did two more reunion tours and attempted to record a new album in 2001, but it was never finished.

Sabbath Scores Spot on Br?egend Game
Posted September 22, 2009 by michelle
Black Sabbath is just one of several heavy metal bands featured on the new action-adventure video game Br?egend. "Children of the Grave," "Never Say Die," and "Symptom of the Universe" all appear on the soundtrack, and the song "The Mob Rules" was used in the first trailer for the game.
Ozzy Osbourne, Sabbath's former lead singer and band co-founder, also appears on the soundtrack with "Believer," "Diary of a Madman," and "Mr. Crowley." In addition, he lent his voice for one of the game's characters.
Br?egend?s soundtrack is a first rate compilation of heavy metal, with all 108 tracks meticulously hand-picked by Tim Schafer, the game?s creator and developer. It is scheduled for release on October 13, 2009, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Other metal bands appearing on the soundtrack include Skid Row, Marilyn Manson, Dragonforce , Megadeth, Judas Priest, Testament and dozens more.

"Rules of Hell" box set just released!
Posted July 14, 2008 by brittany
Black Sabbath fans will delight in the fact that their favorite band is only as far away as the nearest Best Buy.
Best Buy is now carrying a version of the forthcoming "Rules of Hell" box set. The majority of the box will be exactly the same as you can get everywhere else; however, there will be an extra CD packed on the outside that will contain five live tracks from 1981. The live tracks are:
* Neon Knights
* The Mob Rules
* Children of the Grave
* Voodoo
* Country Girl
The live tracks came from the "Live at Hammersmith" release from May of 2007. The first four of these tracks already were released on the UK Tour Edition of "The Dio Years" last year.
If you weren?t lucky enough to snag one at Best Buy, try Amazon.com. The only thing you?ll be missing is the bonus CD, but a portion of the proceeds will go to the band (and who can beat free shipping?)
