Billy Idol is working his way through an extensive worldwide tour this summer, beginning with the first leg in Europe before coming to North America in August! Special guest Slash will be touring with Billy Idol on Sept. 4 at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Mich.; Sept. 8 at Chicago's Riviera Theatre; and Sept. 9 at The Colosseum at Caesars in Windsor, Ontario.
Idol's 28-city tour kicks off on Aug. 5 in Tulalip, Wash., and ends on Sept. 18 at the HFSestival in Gaithersburg, Md. Some highlights of his tour include Aug. 11th and 13th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif.; Aug. 17 at the San Francisco Fillmore; and Sept. 14 at the Boston House of Blues.
New band members Jeremy Colson on drums and Billy Morrison on guitar will be appearing with Idol for the first time this year.
Billy Idol, who was born as William Michael Albert Broad, took the name Idol after being described as a teacher as being 'idle.' After graduating from high school, Idol attended Bromley College, but left after one year. Over the next two years, Billy would join and quit two bands Siouxsie and the Banshees and Chelsea before co-founding his own band, Generation X.
After being signed to a record label, Generation X released three albums before disbanding. In 1981, Idol moved to the U.S. and debuted his first, self-titled album a year later. The album was a success and the songs from his early days like "Mony Mony" and "Dancing with Myself" still remain popular today.
Idol's next two albums, Rebel Yell (1983) and Whiplash Smile (1986), were also successful. In 1990, Idol was involved in a motorcycle accident that cost him the use of one leg for a time. He continued to record, but touring and recording music videos was difficult.
His 1993 album Cyberpunk would be his last before a 12 year break. The album did not do nearly as well as his previous ones. Between 1994 and 2005, when his next album came out, Idol dedicated himself to acting. He appeared as himself in "The Wedding Singer" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and also contributed as a guest vocalist on several albums.
Idol's sixth studio album, Devil's Playground, was released in 2005. This kickstarted a world tour, where he performed at several major festivals, like the Vans Warped Tour, the Voodoo Music Experience and the Download Festival.
The Very Best of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself (2008) is Idol's latest album. As of summer 2010, Idol has embarked on a worldwide tour split between Europe and North America.
