The Drifters formed in 1953 as an Atlantic Records vehicle for ex-Dominoes singer Clyde McPhatter. The original group, known as Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters, was completed by singers Gerhart Thrasher, Andrew Thrasher, Willie Ferbee and guitarist Walter Adams. Their debut single was the million-selling #1 R&B hit, "Money Honey." Bill Pinkney and guitarist Jimmy Oliver replaced Ferbee and Adams. They continued to have more R&B hits with "Such A Night," "Lucille" and "Honey Love."
Bill Pinkney is the sole surviving original member of The Drifters from 1953, a 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a 1999 Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award recipient. Although personnel and management changes over the years have led to the sprouting of many permutations of The Drifters, Pinkney has used the name mark ORIGINAL DRIFTERS since 1958.
