Ben Harper brings a bit of every genre to his music. He prides himself on his funk, but matches it with the acoustics of a folk great, blues twinges and extremely introspective lyrics. While the talented artist doesnt have a hit album to call his own, he has a very dedicated group of fans that doesnt care either way.
Harper grew up in California, where he took a liking to the acoustic slide guitar. After recording the LP "Pleasure and Pain,” he released his debut album with Virgin Records, "Welcome to the Cruel World” in 1994. "Fight for Your Mind” followed in 1995, and was instantly a hit with college radio stations. In 1999, Harper began a working relationship with Jack Johnson, who was an unknown at the time. In fact, he got Johnson his big break.
While his roots are clearly in the U.S., Europe has always put Harper on a bit of a pedestal. He was Rolling Stone Magazines "Artist of the Year in France in 2003, and he sold out shows throughout Europe that summer to support his "Diamonds on the Inside” album.
Within the past decade, Harper has found success with some of his singles, including "Steal My Kisses” and "With My Own Two Hands.” Recently, Harpers following has grown, and his sales have increased as a result. His 2006 album "Both Sides of the Gun” debuted at No.7 on the billboard charts, and his tour with Damian Marley was very popular in the U.S.
Part of the reason for his cult following is Harpers stage presence. He has been involved with some of the biggest music festivals around, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival and the Brisbane River Stage in Australia. In addition, he is known for intimate shows in private clubs with acoustic performances.
