Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are currently on tour throughout April 2012 in support of their new studio album, Rocket Science. Tour dates include stops along the East Coast throughout November, followed by a special Christmas Jam with Warren Hayes, Phil Lesh, Los Lobos and Government Mule on Dec. 10 in Asheville, N.C.

After the New Year, Bela Fleck is teaming up with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 12 in Birmingham, and both March and April 2012 is filled with solo Bela Fleck and the Flecktones tour dates.

Rocket Science debuted in May 2011 as the first album to feature founding member Howard Levy in the regular lineup. Other band members include Future Man on drums and Victor Wooten on bass. Rocket Science is categorized as a jazz and bluegrass album, but charted on both the Top Independent Albums chart and the Billboard Jazz chart.

A New York City native, Bela Fleck was originally interested in playing the banjo after hearing the theme song from the TV show Beverly Hillbillies. As a teen, Bela Fleck enrolled in NYC's High School of Music and Art where he played the French horn and the banjo.

After graduating, Bela Fleck joined up with friends and moved to Boston to try his hand in the music business. He also released his first solo studio album, Crossing the Tracks (1979), during this time. Fleck's friend Sam Bush asked him to join the New Grass Revival Band in 1981. That small move ended up lasting almost a decade for Fleck, though he continued to focus on his solo career. He released another studio album, Drive, in 1988 that received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.

With the New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck aided in releasing five studio albums: Commonwealth (1981), On the Boulevard (1984), New Grass Revival (1986), Hold to a Dream (1987) and Friday Night in America (1989).

The Flecktones came about after the New Grass Revival band dissolved. Original members include Victor Wooten, Howard Levy and Roy "Future Man" Wooten.

Between 1990 and 2011, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones had released a total of 11 albums, from their self-titled release in 1990 to their most recent, Rocket Science in 2011. The group has won four Grammy Awards, two for Best Pop Instrumental Performance (1997 and 2009) and two for Best Contemporary Jazz Album (2001 and 2007).
