B-52s

News and Information
The B-52?s are truly an original band. The quirky new-wave sound that came out of Georgia in 1976 has developed into one of the most beloved bands of the era.

As interesting as the band?s music is its inception. After a drunken evening in a Chinese restaurant, Keith Strickland, Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson formed the collective, although none of them had much musical experience. In fact, they used taped guitar and percussion recordings for early performances. Eventually they developed a sound marked by Pierson and Wilson?s harmony and Schneider?s lead vocals, and they were on their way to stardom.

The single "Rock Lobster" got the attention of the legendary musical venue CBGB in New York City. A performance there gained them press, and they issued their self-titled album soon after. The songs off of the album were bizarre to put it lightly, but they were also catchy and danceable.

Their second album, "Mesopotamia" in 1982, included some outtakes from their experience with David Byrne of the Talking Heads, which was a far cry from the fun-loving group that they were just years before. They released "Whammy!" next and won back fans that were surprised by the more serious sound in 1982. However, tragedy struck when Ricky Wilson died from AIDS in 1985. The group went into seclusion for the next four years.

The time out of the spotlight seemed to help the band, which released their most commercially successful album, "Cosmic Thing," in 1989. The album is was certainly celebrated by the mainstream ? it featured the massive hit singles singles "Love Shack" and "Roam."

Cindy Wilson left the band after the success in 1990, but returned to support the 1998 best-of collection "Time Capsule." In 2002, "Nude on the Moon: The B-52?s Anthology" was released ? it includes 35 songs recorded, some of which were live recordings.

In concert, the band is known to bring the fun flavor of the songs to life. They will have some more music to add to their mix of hits, as well ? the band?s finishing up a new studio recording during the summer of 2007.
