Avril Lavigne is a no-nonsense rock/punk-pop singer who has amassed a legion of fans around the world for her spunky lyrics and rock hooks.
The singer grew up in Canada, and she won a competition to sing with Shania Twain in 1998 on her first concert tour. At the age of 16 she was signed to Arista Records and released "Let Go" the following year, in 2002. The album was a smash hit, fueled by the hit single "Complicated." The next singles from the album, "Sk8er Boi" and "Im With You" were also very popular. After the success of the album, Lavigne was awarded "Best New Artist" at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards and also took home four Juno Awards.
In 2004, "Under My Skin" was released - the lead single "Dont Tell Me" was a hit, as well as "My Happy Ending." During that time, Lavigne dabbled in song writing, particularly "Breakaway" with Matthew Gerard, which was recorded by Kelly Clarkson for the film "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement."
Lavigne has spent a lot of her career touring, including a "Live and by Surprise" mall tour in the U.S. and Canada. In Indianapolis in March of 2004, she recorded an acoustic set including her biggest hits, "He Wasnt," "My Happy Ending," "Dont Tell Me," "Take Me Away," "Nobodys Home," "Sk8er Boi" and "Complicated," which was turned into "Avril Lavigne Live Acoustic EP," released in Target stores.
In 2007, Lavigne released "The Best Damn Thing," which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Charts. The first single was "Girlfriend," a pop-oriented smash hit that was her first single to make it to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The next single was "When Youre Gone," and the thirds is "Hot."
In addition to her massive hits, Lavigne has been involved with a number of albums, including a cover of The Goo Goo Dolls hit "Iris" at the Fashion Rocks concert in 2004. She has also performed "Knockin on Heavens Door" by Bob Dylan, "No One Needs to Know" by Shania Twain and "Basket Case" by Green Day.
Lavigne has become interested in film as her career progresses: she made her first appearance in "Over the Hedge," and animated film, with other big acts such as Bruce Willis, Wanda Sykes and Steve Carell. She also is featured in "The Flock" with Richard Gere and ''''''''Fast Food Nation."
Lavigne is clearly a star on the rise, and she is growing out of a teeny-bopper punk/pop sound into a more mature, rocknroll genre that she will continue to impress fans with for years to come.
